Demiricous: One (hellbound)
27/01/09 || Daemonomania
You know what my favorite part of Vader’s “Live in Japan” is? When Piotr yells, “SLAAAAYEEEERRRR” right before they bust into a cover of “Raining blood”. Do I particularly like Slayer, or live albums? No. But that part sure is awesome. I mention this because I’m sure the boys from Demiricous have yelled “SLAAAAAYEEEERRRR” many times themselves. The problem is they gave the band a shout out not while covering “Angel of death,” but instead while they were ripping Araya and Co. off. As I mentioned I’m not even a Slayer fan, and even I can tell that almost every song on “Hellbound” has a riff or tiny little twisted melody that is immediately identifiable with LA’s favorite thrashers.
So Demiglaze pretty much has one trick up their sleeve – copy Slayer, but add some brutality and harsh, mostly high growls. Are you OK with that? Probably not. There’s good energy in a lot of the songs, and “Perfection and the infection” has one of the most memorable choruses I’ve heard in a while. Having a track called “Repentagram” adds points in the bonus level too. However, the lack of originality combined with a similar pacing on most tracks does not add up to multiple, squirting audiorgasms.
I saw these guys live a few years ago, and they put on an entertaining show despite the lack of originality. The singer was thin and freakish. A girl by the stage let us know that her boyfriend (named Tom or Dave or something) was filling in for Demipernicious’ usual skinsman. We got wasted and kept yelling, “Tom!” (or was it, “Dave!”) throughout the performance. Tom or Dave seemed pretty psyched to have fans in the audience.
And what the fuck is up with that name? The band says they just made it up – doesn’t mean anything. When I first saw it, I thought it was “Demi-curious,” which led myself and the Inquizzitor to wonder if the band was particularly curious about the life and career of Demi Moore. Maybe they all have G.I. Jane tattoos, but I sincerely hope not.
In closing, if you’re an old-school thrash fartknocker you’ll probably think “Hellbound” is an insult. If you’re a metal newbie you’ll probably think this is da hottest shit since Children of Scrotum. And if you’re like me, just a plain old extreme metal fan, you’ll find it tolerable but nothing more.
4 Vader name drops on GD out of 10.
